While you're busy packing for your trip, here are five common scams to be aware of so you can focus on making memories, not losing money. We all know the pickpocket game is strong in most major cities, especially in Europe with Americans being the primary target, but have you heard of any of these other common scams that are used to take advantage of tourists?
1. The Friendship Bracelet Scam: This ploy often targets tourists in popular tourist areas. A friendly individual approaches you and starts weaving a bracelet around your wrist, creating a sense of obligation. Once complete, they demand payment, often at an inflated price.
Tip: Politely but firmly decline if someone tries to put a bracelet on you. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your belongings secure.
2. The Clipboard Petition Scam: You might encounter someone with a clipboard, passionately advocating for a social cause and asking for your signature on a petition. This can be a ploy to distract you while an accomplice picks your pockets or bags or they may put the clipboard down on top of your phone on a table at a restaurant and then conveniently take the phone with them when they leave. (In Paris the scammers will say it is to help the deaf but this is not a real organization!)
Tip: If you're interested in a cause, take a moment to review the petition closely. Donate directly to a verified charity if you choose, but avoid carrying a lot of cash while sightseeing.
3. The Petty Cab Scam: Petty cabs are a fun and convenient way to get around, but there are some tricks to be aware of. Be wary of detours or excessively long routes and per-person pricing.
Tip: If they tell you it is €25, ask if that is TOTAL or per person before you get in.
4. The Dropped Jewelry Scam: Someone "accidentally" drops nice-looking jewelry in front of you. When you bend down to pick it up, they might try to distract you or snatch your belongings, or if you say it is not yours, they may insist you take it and then demand money from you if you pick it up.
Tip: Don't pick up dropped jewelry, especially if it seems staged. There's nothing wrong with a cautious glance around to be aware of your surroundings but your best bet is to ignore the person and keep moving!
5. The Portrait/Photo Scam: An artist offers to do a quick sketch or photo of you for a seemingly reasonable price. However, the finished product might be far less impressive than advertised, or they might demand a much higher price than initially quoted.
Tip: If you're interested in a portrait or photo, politely decline if pressured. Look for established artists with a portfolio you can review before committing.
