The Most Romantic Getaway
A honeymoon is different than any other trip you will take. It will be your first trip together as husband and wife and it may be the most romantic vacation you’ll ever take. Without question, you will both want everything to go perfectly.
The honeymoon is generally the groom’s responsibility, and unfortunately, some grooms don’t understand that it takes considerable time and skill to plan the perfect honeymoon. If you are planning to use airline miles to book your travel, it will require even greater skill to orchestrate the trip. Of course, the most popular honeymoon destinations are frequently booked well in advance, especially if you want to travel during peak season. For obvious reasons, now more than ever, is the time to use the free service of a travel agent!
After you realize that the time to start planning your honeymoon is right now, the next thing to do is think of the places you want to visit. Try choosing a destination where neither of you have been. This way you can share the experience for the first time and have memories that are yours alone. This can be an entirely new destination (an island in the Caribbean you have not visited), a new type of trip (an all-inclusive resort, for example), or even a different hotel or resort in a place you both love.
According to Wikipedia, a honeymoon is the traditional holiday taken by newlyweds to celebrate their marriage in intimacy and seclusion. Today, honeymoons by Westerners are often celebrated in destinations considered exotic and/or romantic. Don’t go against tradition. Make your honeymoon exotic, romantic and intimate!
You may have taken vacations with your fiancé before. And you definitely will go on couples’ getaways again. But after all the stress of wedding planning, you deserve a memorable honeymoon. Here’s what to do to make it an unforgettable trip. Tips from past honeymooners:
Do something you’ve never done before. For us, that is kayaking in the sea. The waves carried us a little further out than we would have liked (and the water sports guy almost took off in his speedboat to rescue us!), but it was fun and exciting. Speaking of fun and exciting, one other new experience we had on our honeymoon: We got it on in our private plunge pool. I definitely would’ve regretted not making the most of that amenity.
Get other people to take pictures of you. I hate to bother other vacationers to take our photo, so I usually resort to the selfie method. Your honeymoon is one trip where you want your pictures to include all of your hubby’s head, so it’s time to get over your shyness of asking for favors. Resort staff members were very gracious about snapping shots of us on the beach and at dinner and they were our favorite pictures from the whole vacation.
Eat and drink decadently. I did this every night--after all, it wasn’t like I had a wedding dress to fit into anymore! But if your meals aren’t part of the hotel deal, make sure to squeeze in at least one crazy delicious and filling dinner during your stay. And if you’re in a tropical locale, by all means, order a fruity cocktail (or seven) that comes with an umbrella in it.
No expectations. If you don’t expect anything, you can’t be disappointed. If it rains, your hotel is crummy, the tour is cancelled, or a million other what-if’s happen on your trip, shrug it off! Laugh, move on. Don’t let the little things ruin your amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Be romantic. Burn candles. Fill the suite with roses. Throw petals on the bed. Wear your favorite perfume. Play music. Drink champagne. Sit in the Jacuzzi. Watch the sunset. It might be a while before you can do any of these things again so have at it!
